Business model

Farming-as-a-Service

“We develop farms as products and offer farming as a service.” You get the harvest; Akar looks after the unit.

How the service works

As described by Akar in its May 2023 MIT Solve application.

  1. Step 01

    Akar places the unit

Akar installs units with "off-takers": retailers, supermarkets, malls, restaurants, cafés, schools and universities.

  2. Step 02

A monthly fee covers the farming

The off-taker pays a fixed monthly fee that covers maintenance, nutrition and seedlings.

  3. Step 03

Sell it, and share the profit

Off-takers who resell the produce harvested from Akar units share the profit with Akar.

  4. Step 04

Or grow for your own kitchen

For self-consumption (hotels, cafés, restaurants), Akar charges per number of plant holes the off-taker requests seedlings for.

All of the farm’s components are standardized and modular. A specialized operating system allows for comprehensive environmental management, and farms may be administered from anywhere.

Why rent instead of build

No expertise needed

Seedlings, nutrients, maintenance and monitoring come with the unit.

Low upfront cost

The FAO STI Portal summarises Akar's model as turning vertical farming "from a capital-intensive investment into an accessible operation".

Fits where you are

Modular units go next to the people who eat the food, instead of a large warehouse farm far away.
