Hydroponics basics
Hydroponics means growing plants without soil, feeding the roots directly with water and dissolved nutrients.
Common systems
NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)
A thin film of nutrient water flows down slightly sloped channels past the roots and back to a tank. It was used at the Blessing Farm greenhouse in Bandung, per a published research summary.
DWC (Deep Water Culture)
Roots hang in an aerated nutrient reservoir. Dissolved oxygen is critical.
Drip & ebb-and-flow
Nutrient solution is pumped to a growing medium on a schedule, then drains back.
What every hydroponic plant needs
- Nutrients: a complete feed such as a two-part AB Mix.
- Oxygen at the roots: from flowing film, air stones or nanobubbles.
- The right pH: usually slightly acidic for leafy greens.
- Light: sunlight in a greenhouse, LEDs indoors.
- Stable temperature: warm water holds less oxygen.
