Why modular beats a warehouse in Indonesia
Akar argued that renting modular units is more efficient in Indonesia than large warehouse vertical farms. An archipelago of more than 17,000 islands and congested cities make long-distance delivery of fresh produce hard. Small units can go into malls, hotels or residential buildings, so food is eaten "within minutes of harvesting" (MIT Solve).
Akar also reported plans for plastic injection-moulded units to cut the cost of goods and scale production.
